Chapter 10 – Bridgit

She wasn’t asleep, not exactly… though she may as well have been, she was lying so utterly still in James’s warm embrace. Strange, to feel so utterly at home in someone’s arms, completely naked. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d been naked… but something about the transformation had completely changed the way she thought about clothing. To return to a body that was wrapped in those foolish extra layers… it just felt ridiculous. Especially with all the delicious possibilities that came into view when the clothes came off…

She let a soft sigh of contentment escape her, and James shifted in response, his arms around her squeezing her just a little tighter for a moment. How long had they been lying here in the sand? It was still light, though there was a deep orange cast to the sunlight that told her that twilight was approaching... and so peaceful out here, with no sounds beyond the gentle rush of the river against the shore, and the distant sounds of birds and wildlife in the trees behind them. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt so at peace, so completely at home in her skin.

James was awake… she could feel him kissing the back of her neck and she smiled, turning over in his arms to get a proper look at that handsome face. God, how did he get away with looking like that? He’d been gorgeous enough in the shitty, washed-out light of the hospital, but out here in the late afternoon sun, he was just… impossible. Those sparkling eyes, the curve of those soft, full lips of which she now had a deliciously intimate knowledge… even his great mane of blonde hair looked perfectly manicured, for all that she knew it must be just as full of sand as hers was. Smiling, he reached up to push a piece of her dark hair behind her ear, and she grinned, feeling oddly self-conscious all of a sudden. What on earth did she have left to feel self-conscious about, after what they’d just done with each other?

“So,” she said thoughtfully, amused by how hoarse her voice was. “I’ve secretly been a bear all this time?”

“Yeah,” he said softly, his eyes watchful but not worried.

She considered this. “Pretty normal first date for you, then?”

That startled a laugh from him, and she felt a warm glow of fondness for him burst in her chest like a firework. Strange, the way looking at him made her body tingle. It was a lot like the feeling she’d been trying to put her finger on for so long, the sensation that had worried her so much at the hospital… the feeling that had taken over her body and turned her into a bear and back again. Why did that seem so … normal?

“Why aren’t I freaking out right now?” she asked now, frowning a little. “I just turned into a bear. I turned into a bear and ran around in the woods. I should be freaking out.
